CAMERA LAB / CONCEPT LESSON

Focal length: choose what fits in the frame

From the same camera position, 14mm includes more of the scene and 30mm gives tighter framing. Moving the camera changes perspective; zooming alone does not.

How the pieces connect

The field of view narrows as focal length increases. On this variable-aperture lens, available maximum aperture also changes.

Apply it to your camera

Compare the verified endpoints. Watch both framing and the aperture readout as you zoom.

What these settings change

01

Aperture • physical light

A lower f-number lets in more light at the same shutter duration. At 14mm, this lens can open to f/4.

02

Shutter • time collecting light

Each frame collects light for 1/50 second. A longer exposure collects more light and more movement.

03

ISO • output brightness

ISO 400 changes output brightness, not incoming light. With little captured light, noise can become easier to see.
