CAMERA LAB / CONCEPT LESSON

ND filters: less light, same motion

A neutral-density filter reduces light before it reaches the sensor. A three-stop ND passes one eighth of the incoming light.

How the pieces connect

Bright sun can overexpose video at 1/50 s even with ISO 100. The camera cannot always reduce brightness enough with those starting settings.

Apply it to your camera

Use a suitable ND filter, close the aperture or change shutter duration intentionally. Check actual highlights, filter quality and color shifts.

What these settings change

01

Aperture • physical light

A lower f-number lets in more light at the same shutter duration. At 14mm, this lens can open to f/4.

02

Shutter • time collecting light

Each frame collects light for 1/50 second. A longer exposure collects more light and more movement.

03

ISO • output brightness

ISO 400 changes output brightness, not incoming light. With little captured light, noise can become easier to see.
