CAMERA LAB / CONCEPT LESSON

Stabilization: steady the camera, follow the subject

Lens stabilization helps reduce camera shake. It cannot stop a moving bicycle from blurring during a long exposure.

How the pieces connect

Subject motion and camera motion are separate sources of blur. Abrupt panning can look rough even when stabilization is enabled.

Apply it to your camera

Use smooth camera movement and a stable grip or support. Choose shutter duration for subject motion and check stabilization behavior on your actual lens.

What these settings change

01

Aperture • physical light

A lower f-number lets in more light at the same shutter duration. At 14mm, this lens can open to f/4.

02

Shutter • time collecting light

Each frame collects light for 1/50 second. A longer exposure collects more light and more movement.

03

ISO • output brightness

ISO 400 changes output brightness, not incoming light. With little captured light, noise can become easier to see.
